The company’s ability to sign up popular athletes has allowed the company to expand into a number of different sports outside of their motocross beginnings. Their most notable sponsorship deal is a lifetime contract with Lance Armstrong.

Oakley has been able to build a company that started in the extreme sports market but now encompasses most sports imaginable. From the humble beginnings in the founder’s garage the company has grown exponentially into many other markets, growing their product offering a customer base, eventually resulting in the owner selling the company for over two billion dollars to their largest competitor.

How Two Designers Started Juicy Couture

In 1995, while living in Pacoima, California, Gela Nash and Pamela Skaist-Levy began to start their own fashion label. Their company was originally called Travis Jeans and was started to sell maternity pants. However in 1996 the founders decided to change the name to Juicy Couture and began designing a girly range of clothing that would be equal to major labels but available and affordable to the general public.

Their first affordable line was also labelled “Juicy Couture” and included mostly casual and athletic wear. One particular product in the range did particularly well and helped the company to achieve success very quickly when released. The brand did not have access to a lot of money in the early years and so progress was slow before they released the velour track suit.

In 1996 after the company had become established the founders wanted to grow the brand as quickly as possible and so to achieve public exposure they began sending their finished products to celebrities. The pair sent a velour track suit with “Madge” embroidered on to Madonna and the celebrity credited the brand by wearing their product and creating a trend. The company grew significantly due to the popularity of the track suit.

Before the 2000s the brand’s clothing was only available in a few stores but since an aggressive expansion plan started the brand was able to open a number of flagship stores and become widely available through other retailers. The velour track suit gained popularity again during this time and the company was able to gain worldwide popularity because the clothing was widely available.

Today the brand’s products are mostly aimed at the high end fashion market and most of their range starts at above $100. The company has also begun to expand into cosmetics, jewellery, handbags and even children’s clothing. The brand also created a plus-size line which was available exclusively to Nordstrom when launched but has since been made widely available and is named “Extra Juicy”.

How Marc Jacobs Built His Business

Many people could see a successful future for Marc Jacobs from an early age. While studying at Parsons New School for Design he won the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award. His desire to work in the industry lead him to become a stock boy at Charivari, an avant-garde clothing boutique based in New York City while very young. While he worked in New York City he also studied at the New York High School of Art and Design despite also studying at a high school in New Jersey, the city in which he lived.

While he was still studying at Parsons he created and sold his first line of hand-knit jumpers and designed a whole collection for Reuben Thomas under the Sketchbook label. Following his graduation from the Parsons school he was offered a design job at Perry Ellis following the death of the founder and gained notoriety for his “grunge” collection in 1993 which eventually lead to his dismissal from the company. However the reputation that he had built at the company allowed him to set up his own labels.

With backing from Onward Kashiyama USA Jacobs was able to set up his own label “Marc Jacobs” and following the release of his collections has won prestigious awards such as the Womenswear Designer of the Year from The Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Jacobs has become a regular in the New York City celebrity seen and thanks to his notorious designs has also become a celebrity himself. His fashion shows are known to be loud and extravagant sometimes spending over $1 million to produce and attracting celebrities from all over the world.

His clothing ranges are well recognised as taking inspiration and making references to fashion from past decades and many designers have commented that Jacobs is nothing more than a plagiarist however, the explosive growth and relentless success that the designer sees suggests he is much more.
