Golfing for Beginners: Part 2

What to keep in your golf bag.

There are many golf bags available; some are designed for fashion, some for utility and some that combine both features. There are big bags, bigger bags and bags so big that they would keep everything I need for a long week-end vacation in one of the side pockets!

A basic, practical golf bag is one just large enough to hold your clubs (obviously), spare golf balls, tees, golf glove, pencils, keys, sunblock cream, ball markers, a ball retriever, an umbrella and a plastic raincoat.

You could also include other items that are handy when outdoors, such as tissues, a small first-aid kit or at least some plasters and some anti-insect spray.

A small pack of wipes can be just what you need too if it gets hot or you get covered with sand in one of the bunkers or you have to fish your ball out of a stream.

Other things that could come in useful are certain drugs: for instance, antihistamine, if you are allergic to wasp stings or medication to counteract an illness like diabetes (if you suffer from it, that is). It is vital to remember to replace these medicines before their expiry date though.

Please remember to turn off your mobile phone before you put it away as a courtesy to the other players. No one is going to be best pleased to hear your phone go off just as he is about to take a shot. It is part of golfing etiquette too. If you must use it, walk away from the teams.

If you have these items with you in your golf bag, you will be covered for most minor tribulations, like a bee sting, an ant bite, a blister or even a sudden downpour. If you know that you are well prepared, you will be able to relax that little bit more and enjoy your game that much more too.

High Cholesterol Levels and Diabetes Is Dangerous

Diabetes is a chronic disease which can have numerous side effects. The condition (normally) comes about as a result of the pancreas not creating enough insulin, which you require to handle the sugar level in your blood. Having diabetes, or too much sugar in your blood can have serious results such as cataracts (treatable blindness), bad teeth and an increased risk of general infections.

However what lots of individuals do not comprehend is that there is a connection between high cholesterol levels and diabetes. This link is known as macular edema and it affects eyesight. If you have diabetes and high cholesterol levels, you should be paying meticulous attention to your diet in order to avoid macular edema

Macular edema is frequently a painful, non-reversible kind of blindness.

In case you are uncertain about cholesterol, it would be best if we talk about this topic in order to clarify. Individuals talk of ‘cholesterol levels’ because there are three measurements that are important. HDL cholesterol is frequently called ‘good cholesterol’ and LDL cholesterol is known as bad cholesterol.

It is important to have LDL because it helps in the generation of bile and vitamin D and it assists regulate hormones, but too much of it can block arteries and cause heart issues. HDL is ‘good’ because it mops up LDL and takes it back to the liver where it is got rid of.

Those are the two main levels. You might be forgiven for thinking that it is best to have as much HDL as you can, and this is a fact, to a large extent, because you do need LDL as well, but the total of both of these levels is also important. You should not have a high level of both together either.

The added reason why these levels are more relevant to diabetics is because diabetics with a high level of LDL run approximately three times more danger of developing macular edema than non-diabetics. Therefore the danger of high cholesterol for diabetics is crucial.

This is such a significant problem that diabetics are warned to check the levels of their cholesterol very frequently. The good news is that diabetics will already be following a diet and the decreased cholesterol diet is fairly comparable and is easy to integrate into your current regime.

The foodstuffs that you should avoid to reduce your level LDL cholesterol include saturated fats such as are found in red meat and dairy products like full-fat milk, butter, cream and cheese. It is also to be found in trans and hydrogenated fats, which are present in junk foods and cheap margarine.

The foodstuffs to eat in order to increase your level of LDL are in essence mono- and poly-unsaturated fats, vegetarian foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, soya products, fish, nuts and grains, particularly whole grains. Roughage and fibre are what you should be searching for. Fish and olive oil are also good in the battle against LDL cholesterol.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on several subjects, but is now concerned with lowering cholesterol without medication. If you want to know more, please visit our site at What Foods Lower Cholesterol?

Coping With Your Daily Stress

We all realize that stress is at a very high level for the vast majority of people and most of us have our own methods of coping with this stress. However, for those who do not know how to cope with stress, it is probably first useful to understand what stress is and how it can manifest itself.

Stress is most simply defined as: “A mentally or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external influences and capable of affecting physical health, usually characterized by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability, and depression” (TheFreeDictionary.com).

There are many reasons why stress can come about, but the most common types of stress come from finances, family, work, school, quarrels with friends and driving. The most stressful situations, however, are divorce, the death of a parent or spouse, moving house and changing job or school.

Since the causes of stress are so varied, it is helpful to be able to determine where your stress is coming from, so that you know how to treat or prevent it. You need to get to know yourself to cope with your stress, because not all people respond in the same way to stress.

For example, actors and top-flight business people often say that they have to have the buzz of stress to give their best performances. They have obviously learned how to harness stress to their own advantage whether unconsciously or by other ways. People who suffer from stress need to get to that phase.

When you have worked out what is causing your stress, you have a prospect of dealing with it. In fact, you have many chances of dealing with it. If the source of the stress is your job, you might like to go for a drink with colleagues after work to talk things through once or twice a week, so long as you do not let it get out of hand and affect your family and your work.

Otherwise, you may go for a massage or a sauna or take regular weekend getaways either for pure relaxation or to follow a specific hobby such as hiking. In fact, a leisure pursuit of some kind is usually a good stress-reliever, even if the hobby itself is stressful. Just altering the routine seems to assist a lot of people. Some people turn to shopping and beauty salons.

A weekend picnic, communing with nature, or rambling are other major de-stressers. The point is that you have to find something that suits you. For example, I work alone all day and detest shopping, so when I have done my bit, I seek out people to have a conversation. My wife on the other hand spends all day with people, and likes to hose the garden alone at the end of her working day.

Other major stress relievers are sports – either watching them or playing them. Playing is obviously healthier than watching, but given that stress is a major killer in the West, the reduction of stress is the central worry. Yoga and meditation are a fantastic compromise between being active and passive in your coping with stress.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on several of topics, but is currently involved with work on high blood pressure charts. If you want to know more or check out some great offers, please go to our website at High Blood Pressure Recipes.

Dieting For Children – It Is Time To Take Steps

It is difficult to see so many children literally overburdening their bodies at such young ages by being overweight. These kids cannot run, jump or play with other children because their bodies just will not permit them to do so. Dieting is a necessity for these kids in spite of our best efforts to protect them from the self-esteem problems that often go together with obesity.

If you have a child that is well outside the normal weight range for his or her age, you are the one who must take the necessary steps to make certain that they shed those excess pounds in order to live a life that is as close to normal as possible. The first thing you have to do however is consult your child’s physician about the best possible course of action to look after the health of your child.

Put quite bluntly however, if you do not make the effort to help your child to shed those pounds you are putting the health of your child at risk. We do not let our children play in the street, we do not let them run around with knives, why on Earth would we allow them to commit suicide by candy? If you have a child that is overweight, the following advice ought to help you and them with their dieting.

First of all, do not make food a penalty or a reward. Food is part of the problem with your children and you should not use it against them. Instead, introduce them to healthy alternatives. Do not keep junk food in the house and do not let them buy lunch at school. Pack their lunches for school so that you know what they are eating. If you do not give them junk food to take away and they cannot have it when at home, they will be better off.

Incorporate healthy snacks into your family’s eating plan rather than junk food. Fresh fruit, chopped vegetables, nuts, and frozen yogurt are good healthy snacks for your kids. When in doubt, consult the food pyramid but watch calories in the process. You want your children to eat a well balanced diet and stop eating junk food and sweets.

Cut out the juices and pop. This may be a huge problem in your house but the best gift you can offer your child is a deep and long-lasting appreciation of water. Water works to make their stomachs feel full and keeps them hydrated for the added exercises you should be introducing into their lives.

Have them take dance lessons, take up a sport, or simply get out and run around the yard. The worst thing you can do is to allow your children to become comatose television, computer, or video game zombies. Get them out of the house and get them active. This helps in two ways. First of all, they are not eating if they are outside playing and having a good time. Second, they are burning calories as they play which is a big bonus in the dieting process of your children.

As your child begins to lose weight, you should start to notice a very profound change in not only the way he or she carries his or herself but also in his or her relations with others. Your child will experience a restored self-confidence as the pounds come off and the teasing at school stops.

If you are at a complete loss as to how to help your child take the weight off there are camps that are designed specifically to deal with weight problems and building self-esteem in children ages 7-19. A camp may be just the answer you are looking for. Another thing to think about is to lead by example. If you do not eat junk food, if you are active, and if you do not engage in emotional over-eating your child will not be learning those behaviours from you or having them strengthened by you.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with our blog why can’t I lose weight. If you have an interest in losing weight, please go over to our website now at Why Can’t I Lose Weight?
