How To Pick The Correct Cloth For Your Sewing Job
Up until fifty years ago, the overwhelming majority of women knew how to sew. All the women that I knew as a child sewed and knitted and made some of the clothes for me and my four brothers. When I was eight or nine, I and every other child in my class was taught the fundamentals of knitting and before I went off to college, my mother taught me how to take up my jeans, sew on patches and repair my clothes.
Unfortunately, sewing, knitting and repairing clothes has largely died out in the United Kingdom. I now live in Thailand and I do not see much evidence of sewing or knitting here, so I assume that these arts are dying out all over the world among the masses, although I am sure that there are individuals everywhere who still knit and sew.
It is a real shame. If you are going to make your own clothes or furnishings like cushions, pillows or soft toys, it is quite essential that you select the correct fabric for the job. Using the wrong fabric will make your job harder and might even render your work worthless. So here are a few tips on choosing the correct fabric for the task in hand.
The first and most obvious thing to do is read the recommendations on the pattern you are using and if you are a novice take that advice until you know what you are doing. Unfortunately, a lot of people do not read the directions anymore. I can not count the number of times I have seen someone struggling to assemble something and discovered the directions in the bin with the packaging.
Get to know fabrics by examining the textiles in the shop. Ask questions about textiles and look at the fabric on the bolt or roll. If the cloth does not look correct on the bolt it probably will not look correct anywhere else either. When you unroll a couple of feet of the bolt, does it lie flat or does it roll up or crumple? Grab a handful and squeeze it. Does it crumple easily? Does it feel right?
Is the cloth fraying on the bolt? If so it will fray whilst you use it too. Look on the bolt for special cleaning or handling directions. Do they suit your requirements?
It is quite difficult to work with satin because it slips easily. T-shirt knit is also difficult because it rolls up on itself. It is probably best to avoid these materials until you acquire some experience
Cotton is the best cloth for novices because it is easy to work with and everyone is very familiar with cotton goods. We know how they must feel and we can tell decent, thick weighty cotton from cheap, thin cotton. We also all know that cotton shrinks. Therefore before you cut you fabric. wash it and cut the shrunken cotton fabric. In effect, you have pre-shrunk it.

Giles The Cartoonist And The Giles Family
Ronald ‘Carl’ Giles was one of the most well-known British post war cartoonists whose output appeared in the British newspapers The Daily Express and its sister paper The Sunday Convey between the dates of 1943 and 1991.
He was born Ronald Giles in Islington, London in 1916. His school-friends dubbed him ?Karlo? after the actor Boris Karloff to whom they thought he bore a resemblance. This was later shortened to Carl and it stayed with him for the rest of his life.
He left school when he was 14 years of age and started working as an office boy for a Wardour Street film company where he was later promoted to an animator for cartoon pictures. This led in 1935 to his employment by the famous producer and director Alexander Korda on the first full-length British sound-tracked colour cartoon film, The Fox Hunt.
After a spell working in Ipswich, he joined Fleet Street in 1937. He worked as a cartoonist on the weekly newspaper Reynolds News where his efforts came to the attention of the editor of the Sunday Express and he was offered a job working for both the Daily Express and Sunday Express at the not petty salary of 20 guineas a week. His first cartoon for his new employers was published in the Sunday Express in October 1943.
The 20 guineas a week proved a portent of greater fortunes to come as by 1955 he was being paid no less than ?8,060 a week for an output of three cartoons. He was now a wealthy man.
In 1959 he was given the OBE and among his greatest admirers and fans were members of the Royal family who often received originals of his work.
His most famous character creations were The Giles Family who first appeared in August 1945. They were a family from the more well off side of the British working class living in a suburban semi-detached house. The head of the family was Grandma a real battle axe of a person whom anyone crossed at their peril. She is now immortalised as a bronze statue standing in Queen St Ipswich gazing up at the office where Giles used to do his work.
They were utilized by Giles to comment on a current events in the news of the day and proved to be extremely patriotic although cautious of authority. One remarkable attribute of the family was that although their homes, hobbies and clothes reflected the changing standards of the day, their ages remained unchanged although the cartoons ran for 46 years.
Today any middle-aged, middle class Englishman ( or woman) will have happy memories of the Giles Annual. This was a very welcome addition to the Christmas stocking and contained a assortment of Gile’s output for the previous year. For many years this compilation was selected by Giles himself.
Carl Giles died in 1995 and in 2000 he was voted ‘Britain’s Favourite Cartoonist of the 20th Century’.
